Thank You for Joining GWA’s Groundbreakers Award Ceremony!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting Global Women Asia’s inaugural Women-in-STEM Groundbreakers Award. We are inspired by all the honorees: Neeru Khosla of CK-12 Foundation; Mastercard’s Girls4Tech initiative; Pakistani Women in Computing (PWiC) and its co-founders, Huma Hamid and Farah Ali; and Professor Nancy Y. IP of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
Neeru Khosla of CK-12 Foundation and Tara Nathan of Mastercard’s Community Pass discussed how AI and technology how AI and technology can level the playing and enhance equity across sectors such as education and agriculture. “Keeping children engaged and interested in learning so they don’t drop out is half of the work done,” remarked Neeru, whose organization has benefited over 300 million students in the world. Tara noted, "When we support smallholder farmers in remote and rural communities, we are supporting small businesses and creating economic opportunity for them through technology."
Dr. Chenming Hu of UC Berkeley, recipient of the National Medal of Science and Technology in 2016 and the inventor of FinFET, the technology breakthrough that changed the semiconductor industry, gave a visionary talk on the future opportunities and constraints of AI technology, semiconductors, and energy use. Dr. Hu also demystified the need to be good at math to succeed in STEM. "If you like any math, science or computer classes, there is room for you in STEM."
The Groundbreakers Award Ceremony also concluded GWA’s 2024 Women-in-STEM Fellowship. This new cohort of fellows comprised of promising women leaders from around the world who came to the San Francisco Bay Area earlier last week for a three-day leadership program.
We are grateful for a letter of support from the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.
